Chapter Eight

A scream yanked Vixen out of sleep.

She sat up in bed, or attempted to, but Bray’s arm held her in place against his body. “What’s wrong?”

Bray pressed his lips against the back of her neck. “Nothing. Just Leighton. Go back to sleep.”

But it wasn’t nothing. Vixen knew the sound of that scream well. She had heard it too many times in the past to ignore it now. The sound wasn’t from fear, its origin was from pain. Leighton wasn’t in pain at the moment, but his mind was reliving the cause and Vixen had to act.

Lifting Bray’s arm, she slid from the bed. Grabbing the shirt that had been left forgotten on the floor, she pulled it on. The bottom hit just above her knees so she didn’t bother with a pair of pants she wouldn’t be able to find in the dark. Once buttoned up, she stepped out of the room and padded down the hallway, following the scream.

Vixen didn’t have to look behind her to confirm Bray followed. The hallway led deeper into the mountain, sloping downward.

Interesting. Not only was the house built into the rock but also into the ground. Vixen wondered if Bray built the house to double as a shelter in case the government ever found out about them.

The scream led to a closed door and Vixen pushed it open. Leighton crouched in the corner of the room, between the bed and a dresser. His eyes were wide open, but he didn’t see anything. She stepped into the room, careful not to make any loud sounds, but also careful to make enough noise that her presence wouldn’t surprise Leighton when he came to.

She knelt in front of him, but didn’t touch him. “Leighton?”

The screaming stopped. His head jerked up at the noise and he blinked. Once. Twice. A third time. “It was a bad dream.”

By how quickly he responded, Vixen assumed he used that excuse a lot. And that the others living in the house accepted it.

She held out her hand. “Let’s get you back to bed.”

Leighton reached out, but hesitated a moment before pressing his palm against hers. She took his weight and pulled him to his feet. No point in giving him a reason to back away from her help, especially since his mind hadn’t come back online from whatever horror he was reliving.

Vixen led him to the bed and Leighton followed. Once he climbed in, she pulled the blanket up before sitting down next to him. Not knowing for sure what caused the scream, she didn’t reach out to comfort Leighton with touch. She needn’t have worried. Leighton grabbed her wrist and clung to her.

A soft growl came from the doorway and Vixen looked over her shoulder at Bray hovering in the shadows. She rolled her eyes, but otherwise ignored Bray’s outburst and returned her attention back to Leighton.

Neither spoke. Vixen rubbed circles and other shapes on Leighton’s back with her free hand and he clutched at her wrist, refusing to let go.
